Now that you have closed on your dream property, you might be faced with some questions regarding your homestead exemption:
1. What is Homestead exemption? Every U.S. citizen or legal resident that has legal or equitable title to real property in the State of Florida and who resides thereon and in good faith makes it their permanent home as of January 1st, is entitled to claim up to $50,000 exemption on their primary residence. The first $25,000 of this exemption applies to all taxing authorities. The second $25,000 excludes school board taxes and applies to properties with assessed values greater than $50,000.
2. When is the deadline for filling? The deadline is March 1st of each year.
3. What documentation will I need? Applicants are required to furnish their social security number, and should have available evidence of ownership such as warranty deed or a tax bill in your name. If property is held jointly by husband and wife, either party may come in to apply for exemption. If filing an application for exemption, be prepared to provide two proofs of Florida residency dated prior to January 1st .
